“You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you.” - Dale Carnegie.
Sometimes who you know is just as important as what you know. Meet Tommy Knapp, otherwise known as the relationship broker of South Florida. Tommy brings a unique perspective to networking as he matches projects with people and people with projects and events at a local and national level.
Tommy spent much of his youth on the football fields of Syracuse, New York. After graduating high school, he played football for Ithaca College - winning the Division III National Championship and sharing a record in the title game with three interceptions. True to his love of sports, he graduated with a degree in Sports Management. The problem was, he had no idea what to do with it and the business world had no idea what to do with him!
Like many recent graduates, Tommy searched for his professional identity. His professional journey began with a job for Continental Airlines that ultimately transitioned him into the unexpected, exciting world of hospitality and tourism.
Frank Fazekas, his mentor and President of Apex Tours (a travel business specializing in organizing group trips for students and adults), offered Tommy a position as Vice President of Marketing and Sales. Tommy accepted and quickly grew the company into a million dollar business. To the casual observer, he had it all - an exciting career traveling the world, meeting new people, experiencing new cultures, and helping students become involved in their education. Yet, something was missing.
They say good things happen when you least expect it, and such was the case for Tommy. It was January 2001, and Tommy had left the glacial Syracuse weather for his annual retreat to where the sun shined and the air was balmy. While in South Florida, he met a friend from Syracuse (and her friend Michele) for dinner. He and Michele hit it off instantly, turning the night into a stroke of serendipity. The next four days marked the beginning of a wonderful life together. Happily married for more than four years, they have two beautiful sons, 3-year old Zane and Bryce born Feb. 9th, 2009. Home is where his heart is and where he finds his greatest joys.
Tommy handles life and its challenges with panache and optimism. He thrives on interacting with a wide spectrum of people and communicates effortlessly with them. As a former account manager in the premium seating department with the NFL’s Miami Dolphins and a corporate development sales executive with the BankAtlantic Center & NHL’s Florida Panthers, Tommy took his passion for sports from the playing field to the front office. His experience in premium sales and corporate development led him into a new arena of professionals - executives and entrepreneurs. Tommy believes everyone possess natural talents and abilities, the key determining how to weave intensity, drive and determination into those talents to achieve your dreams. For Tommy, it’s his effortless ability to connect people.
As a result of the relationships Tommy has developed over the years, he has formed “intimate networking” groups that focus on creating mutually beneficial business opportunities by getting to know individual community leaders. Every Thursday morning he hosts a networking event called ‘Thursday’s with Tommy’ where he brings 8 to 10 highly influential and dynamic individuals together. There’s no formal agenda and no cost to attend - it’s a relaxed environment that encourages open conversation as an effective way of connecting and interacting with fellow business leaders. It is the perfect venue for Tommy’s talents and brings out the best in those invited.
Tommy also hosts a series of executive mastermind groups, professional partnership forums and business cocktail events at upscale locations such as China Grill in Fort Lauderdale, Asia de Cuba in Miami and in luxury suites for concerts and sporting events. It’s all about his passion for people!
An avid philanthropist, Tommy is generous with his time. Committed to helping others on a highly personal level, he serves on various local boards and committees, acts as a mentor, and raises money for charities including: The Broward Humane Society, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, The Woman’s Cancer Association of the University of Miami, Take Stock in Children, and TAG (a mentoring group for college students).
Tommy is an engaging conversationalist with a positive, energetic attitude, and possesses a gift for bringing people and events together. He is eclectic, cosmopolitan, driven, and passionate about his life and his career – and someone you will never tire of working with! Tommy is definitely achieving the very essence of success and having a blast while doing it.
