"Life is what happens when you are busy making other plans." - John Lennon
There are people who plan for the future and those who embrace the present. A little girl, wise beyond her years, wrote: "Slow down, don't dance so fast, the time is short and the music won't last. When you run so fast to get somewhere, you miss half the fun of getting there. When you worry and hurry through your day, it's like an unopened gift thrown away."
Meet Dr. Charmaine Johnson, a woman with great enthusiasm for life and knowledge who welcomes each day with open arms and anticipates the adventures it unveils.
When Charmaine was 12 years old she underwent orthodontic treatment, like many pre-teen teenagers. Instead of dreading her appointments, Charmaine looked forward to them and was eager to "pick" the good orthodontist's brain. Her orthodontist found her enthusiasm for dentistry inspirational and became a source of encouragement for her, especially as she became increasingly inquisitive about the dental field. It was clear - Charmaine would someday become a dentist. With that goal in mind, she began to focus her education on the sciences.
Born and raised in South Africa, Charmaine attended dental school at a University located in Johannesburg, South Africa. While in dental school, Charmaine fell in love and married an aspiring anesthesiologist, Warren. During the initial months of their marriage, her husband was offered the chance to further his education in the United States at Rush-Presbyterian, St Lukes Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. Firm believers that education is the key to opening doors throughout life, they packed up and relocated to the windy city of Chicago.
During her second year of dental school, Charmaine discovered the area of dentistry she wanted to specialize in - all of them! She thoroughly enjoyed being exposed to a mixture of cases in various specialties and performing diverse procedures - the more challenging the better. General dentistry was to become her professional future.
Thirsty for knowledge and awaiting acceptance into the general residency program at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Charmaine began pursuing her MBA. Rising to the challenge a year later when she was accepted into the residency program, for the next year Charmaine satisfied her residency requirements by day and her MBA courses by night. Not only did she complete her MBA while completing the residency program, Charmaine graduated at the top of her residency class and was asked to be the Assistant Director of the General Residency program -which she happily accepted.
Fast forward five years later when they tired of the harsh Chicago winters. Charmaine and her husband were ready to move to a warmer climate and be closer to family. The decision to move to Palm Beach, Florida was an easy one - they would be close to their only family living in the United States and living in a tropical paradise.
Charmaine's enjoyment of working with her hands makes dentistry a natural professional fit. Intrigued by people from all walks of life and various backgrounds, she loves learning from them and hearing their stories. True to her steadfast belief that education is power, Charmaine takes an educational approach to dentistry. She continually explores the latest advancements in dental technology and spends the time necessary to educate her patients, helping them understand their condition and the treatment(s) being recommended.
Charmaine works hard to find a healthy balance between her career and her family. While she loves her job, her family is her greatest pleasure. Charmaine and her husband love to explore the world. Their jet setting 17-month old son, Nicholas, has already been to 4 different countries! For Charmaine it's about the experiences - tasting new foods, discovering different cultures, exploring new countrysides.
When you step through the doors of her practice, be prepared to have a unique dental experience. Dr. Charmaine Johnson doesn't run an HMO based practice - she has a patient based practice she takes tremendous pride in. Charmaine has built her practice around developing relationships with her patients and has created a relaxed, fun, educational environment where her patients and staff are treated like family. She delivers quality care and knows her patients personally, not just clinically. She believes that "to really enjoy what you do, you have to be passionate about it", and she is passionate about educating her patients and restoring oral health and functionality.
You'll be as impressed with her warmth and personality as you will be with her professional skills and expertise. Quite the blend.
