Family Man

The fun-loving Dr. Steven Licata is crazy about his family. He’s completely wild about them, in fact. Many physicians love their families from the heart, but not all manage to balance a demanding practice with hearth and home. Not so for this Doctor Dad; his priorities line straight up:

•Priority #1: wife Jennifer, daughter Kayla, 8, and son Brandon, almost 3

•Priority #2: healthier patients and practice at the Institute for Non-Surgical Orthopedics

This is good news for patients. Here’s why.

A typical weekend at the Licata house could include a laughter-laced afternoon at a Wiggles concert (if you don’t know who the Wiggles are, don’t worry…you have to be a parent of a preschooler to know), followed by a birthday party full of eight-year-old princesses or a wide-eyed stroll through the zoo. You might find this family foursome at a hands-on children’s museum or splashing happily around a water park as Daddy chases kids through fountains of fun. Dr. Licata belongs to a local Dad’s Club and is fearless on father/daughter camping trips. The Licata’s love each other and embrace this adventure called life together.

So when Monday morning rolls around and Dr. Licata greets his first patient, he’s refreshed and full of the joy of living. He’s energized, healthy, and focused. Always a relationship builder, he treats patients like they are the most important person in the world—and for that moment they truly are.

Dr. Licata greets them warmly. He listens intently. He cares deeply. And then he does what he does so well—he helps to heal pain. He taps into his own personal vault of knowledge and experience to make patients feel better…uncovering pain’s source, eliminating its root, and teaching patients to make choices that direct their body toward wellness.

When it comes to wellness, Dr. Licata focuses on health, illness prevention, and lifestyle changes in conjunction with the treatment of pain and illness. Known around the office as the official “health freak,” he’s the guy mischievously drawing skull and crossbones on the office box of donuts. If he had his way, the donuts would never have made it past the front door much less into anyone’s diet. This penchant for healthy living isn’t some recent fad, either. He was raised with a healthy lifestyle by his parents. Then he met Jennifer, an occupational therapist who took the health kick to the next level. She encouraged a lifestyle change to an organic diet, eliminating trans fats, dyes, carcinogens, and harmful chemicals from the home for the safety of the family. He’s too witty and friendly to be offensive about it, but Dr. Licata holds nothing back when it comes to educating patients about the direct relationship between a healthy diet, regular exercise, a toxin-free environment, and our body’s health and wellness. He’s not trying to be a member of the nutrition police—he’s just trying to keep people well. He figured out that we only get one body and if we don’t take good care of it we have to leave it behind. But not on his watch, not if he can help it. So he’s taken health consciousness up a notch, practicing in his family what he preaches in his practice.

At the Institute for Non-Surgical Orthopedics, Dr. Licata is an Osteopathic physician board certified in Family Practice and Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine. Osteopaths are licensed physicians who emphasize the importance of the neuromusculoskeletal system, or the body’s system of nerves, muscles, and bone joints and how those body mechanics are regulated by the central nervous system. It’s a hands-on specialty, and Dr. Licata’s experience combines the skills and expertise of several medical disciplines. He’s a musculoskeletal medicine specialist handling acute, chronic, and traumatic pain; overuse injuries related to sports or repetitive work; and diseases such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, and multiple sclerosis. He’s a family doctor treating kids of all ages and adults from teens to seniors. He’s a hands-on manipulation specialist, with exhaustive training. He treats pain with anesthesiology and orthopedic methods such as injections to avoid surgery. And he’s an expert nutritionist, infusing a holistic, preventative approach to avoid toxins and prevent disease. Some patients call him a “miracle worker,” but he’s a bit reticent about putting that in print. Still, they said it first.

Strike the “miracle worker” if it makes him uncomfortable. But leave in “fun-loving,” “family man,” “health freak,” and “an extraordinarily good doctor!” And get rid of those donuts, cigarettes, and trans fats before Dr. Licata finds out.
